Drumming delight, percussion perfection! image

The backbone of so much music, the drums are also dearly loved as lead instruments in their own right - and here we examine some of the percussion talent who'll be driving crowds wild in just a few weeks' time.

Mississippi drummer and singer, Cedric Burnside learned his way in the blues as the grandson of the great RL Burnside, and it shows in his truly electric live performances. Catch Cedric with partner Trenton Ayers on guitar, at their two St Andrew Square Spiegeltent gigs (Mon 20 July, 5.30pm and Tue 21 July, 10pm)

Ole Seimetz cites Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, James Brown and Jimi Hendrix among his influences, and leads a superb quartet who keep things grooving and swinging from start to finish. He and the band will play the Jazz Bar on Wed 22 July at 10pm.

John Rae's 'Experience' septet will present a specially commissioned new piece, which is sure to please. Rae's work blends the traditional with the modern and the classic, and has been described as "21st century jazz". The Experience will play a double bill with Venezualan pianist Enrico Blanco at the George Square Speigeltent, Sun 19 July, 8pm.

Antonio Sanchez and Migration bring slick New York cool in bucketloads, with Sanchez's thrilling, powerful drumming style keeping the crowd on the edge of their seat, while around him Migration play their exceptional contemporary jazz sound. See them at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre Studio on the opening evening of the festival, Fri 17 July at 8pm.

And finally there's Willie "The Touch" Hayes, a magical blues singer and drummer from Chicago, who'll be at the heart of an amazing blues afternoon on Sat 25 July from 1pm. Willie's band will be joined by guitarist John Bruce as part of a three hour extravaganza at the St Andrew Square Spiegeltent, also featuring Mud in your Ear with Brandon Santini and the Grainne Duffy band. Then at 5.30pm in the same venue the Willie Hayes Band will perform again as part of their UK tour.
