See someone new - First Time Friday, part 1 26 Jun 2015
As well as bringing you some of the biggest names around, Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival is all about finding great new talent that you may not have had the chance to see before – and this year we have plenty of artists making their first appearance at the Festival!
Here’s the first in a series of First Time Friday stories – rounding up just some of the rising stars that you can catch this July...
Playing at our fantastic new Spiegeltent venue on St Andrew Square will be the wonderfully bizarre Gabby Young and Other Animals (Monday 20 July, 7.30pm) who bring together a range of influences from Balkan party music, to jazz, swing and global folk!
From our newest venue to one of the old favourites now, and at the Jazz Bar, the Michal Milczarek Trio will be making their UK debut (Sunday 26 July, 8pm) with their excellent rocky-jazz sound.
Back to a Spiegeltent, but this time it’s the one in George Square (Saturday 18 July, 8.30pm), where Ambrose Akinmusire’s quartet and Enrico Zanisi’s trio present a fantastic jazz double bill of thrilling trumpet and pulsating piano from the US and Europe.
Joining us from Australia will be Briana Cowlishaw, a wonderful singer with a voice filled with grace and beauty. Briana will be mesmerising the crowd at the Jazz Bar (Saturday 18 July at 6pm) on what’s sure to be a great evening.
Still mesmerising, but more in a fiery, stomping, in-your-face-Chicago-blues sort of way are Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials whose rocking tunes will really get the party going back at the St Andrew Square Spiegeltent (Sunday 19 July, 10pm)
And in the same venue on Wednesday 22 July (7.30pm) you’ll find Malian foursome Songhoy Blues ripping it up with their exciting blend of West African pop, American blues, rock guitar and hypnotic energy.
And that’s just for starters - look out for more First Time Fridays at the end of next week, or check out our Firsts theme for even more new artists at this year’s Festival!
