Great Guitars 06 Jul 2017
In the beginning was Charlie Christian, but in terms of real electricity it was John McLaughlin in the 1970’s who defined jazz on the rock instrument, and he was followed in the early 80’s by two musicians who, amazingly, have been world beaters for nearly 40 of Jazz’ 100 years: Mike Stern and John Scofield. When the massive fusion drum star, Billy Cobham, came to Scotland in 1980, his band featured a mid-20’s guitar whippersnapper – and he completely stole the show: MIKE STERN. Here’s a memory for those lucky enough to be there that night on YouTube. Scofield and Stern won’t be around forever. And they’re very rarely on the same stage. Next Friday, 14th July at Festival Theatre, could be a concert people will remember in 40 years time!
