NEWS FROM OSLO
Oslo Jazz Festival are international partners with Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival. There’s a longstanding bond between our Festivals spanning nearly forty years. Their dates in 2019 are 11-17 August and you can check out the programme at: https://oslojazz.no/
We will welcome Edvard Askeland, Director of the Festival to Edinburgh, and, of course, we have an exciting programme of Norwegian Jazz, including Jan Garbarek, General Post Office, Swing It Dixieland, and Harald Lassen.
Annually, Oslo Jazz Festival awards a special musician’s prize, and this year, it’s gone to drummer, Paolo Vinaccia: https://www.vg.no/rampelys/musikk/i/50olA1/aerespris-til-paolo-vinaccia?utm_source=vgfront&utm_content=row-13
This is very poignant because Paolo is very unwell. Scottish audiences know him through his long association with Tommy Smith and Arild Andersen, in Arild’s Trio, and performances with the SNJO.
We asked Tommy to say a few words as we salute Paolo and wish him all the best from Scotland:
"Paolo observes and imagines art and music in everything around and within himself, whether it’s a bowl of fruit or just the bowl, or the insect upon the fruit, or the rhythm of the human crunch when the apple is bitten, Paolo is the embodiment and definition of the word Art in its truest form, for that man dreams, lives and breaths creative sparks.
He originates and blesses music and love from any source and in all contexts to the highest level, from punk to junk, jazz to pizazz, rock to crock, and metal to skeletal. It’s true we are all individuals and omit originality but Paolo is more individual and original than anyone else in the world. There can be only one, and he is Paolo Vinaccia."
