The Mound, Princes Street, Grassmarket

2.30pm – Parade from The Mound to the West End of Princess Street

2.30-5pm – Performances in Princes Street, Princes Street Gardens, Grassmarket

The Festival Carnival has become a key event in the launch of the summer Festival season, and will once again set Princes Street, Princes Street Gardens and The Grassmarket humming with the rhythms of Brazilian drumming, New Orleans brass band, Balkan beats and maybe a Scottish tune or two. As well as a treat for the ear, the Carnival offers a feast for the eyes with sequined dancers, feathered costumes, Chinese dragons, circus performers and street theatre in one big dazzling spectacle under the castle!

Some of the performers include:

  • M-Jam   – Caribbean music from Martinique
  • Immortal Style  – South African break dancers
  • D’Arte Company – Dutch group promoting the heritage of their native Curacao
  • Chorus Line Dance Company – Greek dancers combining traditional dance with cheerleader fervour
  • Bombrando – Portuguese drums and bagpipes
  • Urban Woorden Street Poetry  – slam and rap from Belgium
  • Roots and Routes Dance Group – from Holland specialising in street and urban dance
  • Durban Music School – Brass Band from South Africa
  • Chinese Lion and Dragons
  • Chinese Dancers – from Beijing
  • 3 Points Dance – Spanish urban and contemporary dance
  • Enjoy – Commedia Dell’Arte from Italy
  • Plus many great Scottish groups including: The Beltane Society, Anansi, TESS, Samba Ya Bamba,
