From the New Orleans brass band tradition to trad jazz, carnival music, reggae and beyond! Brassed! is a new brass band project from Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival. We aim to teach 20 young people, between the ages of 15-25, from Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) backgrounds how to play an instrument and experience the joy of playing in a group setting. No previous musical experience is necessary. Participants will learn music in a safe and encouraging environment and most of all have fun!
It is 100% free to join the group and every participant will receive a brand-new instrument. All we ask in return is that participants make a real effort to engage with the course and attend all of the classes.
Style of music
The main inspiration behind the band was taken from the great tradition of New Orleans brass bands and some of their best modern bands including the Hot 8 Brass Band and Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Throughout the course you'll also learn about a variety of other styles such as blues, caribbean music, trad jazz, carnival music and much more.
Don’t worry if you do not currently play or own an instrument. As part of this project, we will buy all participants a new instrument which is yours to keep even after the project is finished. There will be no cost of any kind for this.
The band will be made up of:
1 tuba or sousaphone
4 marching snare drums
1 marching bass drum
When you fill out the sign-up form you will be asked what instrument you would like to play, and instruments will be assigned on a first come first served basis.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis all of the classes will take place online via Zoom. The course will begin with some ice breaker sessions where the participants will get a chance to meet the team, the other participants and learn about different brass band traditions. We will then start 12 weeks of music lessons where everyone will start to get to grips with their instruments in small groups. We will also have some masterclasses from guest artists. After the 12 weeks of small group lessons finish, we will start another 12 weeks of group rehearsal learning new music that has been specially written for the group. We will then finish the course by making a group recording and having an online watch party.
Classes will take place every week on Tuesday evening from 7-8pm.
The course will begin on Tuesday 18 May and finish on Tuesday 9 November.
