When jazz was pop music in Britain, Scottish bands were at the heart of the boom. Scottish musicians and bands headed south and became the pop stars of their day. The Clyde Valley Stompers, Sandy Brown and Alex Welsh created a golden age for Scottish jazz. Along with the Godfather of Scottish jazz, George Chisholm, they filled the radio and television and toured all over Britain and Europe.
The Batchelor’s of Jazz pay tribute to that era, playing Edinburgh clarinetist Sandy Brown’s quirky original music, the sophisticated swing of Edinburgh trumpeter Alex Welsh’s band and the downhome trad beloved of the Stompers’ fans.
Some of the Batchelors were part of that jazz boom and recreate the music with love and enthusiasm.
